VelBet : 3rd Anniversary ONEMAN LIVE PREMIUM GANG NIGHT GOLD EMBLEM 2012/2/24 SHIBUYA O-Crest

-- VelBet 3rd Anniversary ONEMAN LIVE
PREMIUM GANG NIGHT GOLD EMBLEM
2012/2/24 SHIBUYA O-Crest

On February 24, 2012, hundreds gathered at Shibuya O-Crest to celebrate VelBet's third anniversary. Surrounded by their "gang" and Shibuya O-CREST being the place where they had played together for the very first time as a band, it felt a bit like returning home in more than a sense.

When the lights went off, the band came on stage to the sound of a special version of their instrumental track "GAIN COЯE", remixed especially for the occasion. As the band finally launched into the first songs, the audience immediately started jumping and pumping their fists in the air in perfect sync with the melodies, copying the sometimes intricate furi-tsuke performed by vocalist Riuki on center stage.

The set list featured a wide array of songs pulled out of the band's very first releases, all the way to their latest single "GAIN COЯE" which hit the shelves in September last year, acting as a sort of timeline of the band's three-year-long history.

The wilder, up-beat songs managed to keep their audience on their toes during most of the night, punctuated by a few emotional ballads during which the crowd stood almost motionless, almost as if hypnotized. The two guitarists both delivered catchy and well-executed riffs, supported by a reckless rhythm section, the vocalist also adjoining his powerful voice with profound and meaningful lyrics.

"The festival is finally here!" Riuki said during a MC. "A lot of things happened during the past three years, but tonight we're just gonna have fun. Me and the other members, we want to give you the best memories!"

After the main set ended, drummer Natsuka returned under on stage by himself and made his way back behind his drums. "Thank you for the encore! Our last one-man live was quite a while ago... You can still keep going, right? Show me what you're made of, Shibuya!" As his words coaxed the crowd back into a frenzy, Natsuka exhibited his percussionary prowess with a fast and furious freestyle drum solo, only to be joined by bassist Ryohei and the two guitarists, Hagiri and Hyuga.

"Let's jam!" Ryohei shouted, stealing the center stage while Riuki still remained offstage. The four of them kept the fans entertained as they took turns shouting random things in their microphones, often teasing or professing their love for each other, and getting the fans to repeat after them.

"Did you have enough of this yet?" Ryohei asked the crowd after a few minutes of constant call-and-response. "We've had enough!" Some of the fans responded in jest, causing everyone to burst in laughter.

As Riuki finally joined with the rest of them, thick-rimmed glasses on his nose and the band's towel draped over his shoulders, VelBet went on to perform a few more songs. "I love you all. Let's become as one!" A strong sense of unity could be felt between the members themselves, and with their audience. Throughout the entire performance, the five of them could be seen wearing a huge grin on their face, and often reached out to touch the fans out-stretched hands. They moved a lot around the stage, often switching sides and playing back-to-back together.

During the following MC, Ryohei was convinced by his bandmates to perform one of his infamous "Teppan" jokes. "If you guys don't laugh, I won't do it ever again though!" he warned the crowd before pretending to fall onto a hot iron plate while doing push-ups on the vocalist's stand as everyone roared with laughter. "Shit! It's a teppan! Ouch, ouch!"

With the night finally nearing its end, both the band and their fans seemed to put all their passion and energy into the few remaining songs. Things got so heated up that even Riuki couldn't resist diving from the stage as fans did crowd-surfing too.

The final number dragged on for several minutes, almost as if they didn't want to say goodbye just yet. But eventually, the last notes resounded and the five members came together at the front and linked hands, asking the fans to do the same as they jumped in celebration of their three years.

Sure enough they wouldn't come back after that exit, the crowd slowly started trickling out of the venue, though others remained planted in front of the stage and started chanting the encore call, hopeful for just one more song. That wish was soon granted when, much to everyone's surprise, the lights came back on and the five members returned on stage for a double encore.

"Alright, you can leave now. Nah, just kidding, you can't. I'm really happy!" Riuki laughed as he addressed the fans, before they closed the night with the anthem-like "chem;cal[R]Gang".

"Thank you!" The five members said before they took their final leave.

For VelBet, those three years have been a long road paved with many obstacles, but also many rewarding experiences, and surely the five of them will keep going strong and continue to face forward with new challenges, so please keep an eye on them!
